Within this programme, students can choose to qualify with:
- HND Advanced Manufacturing Engineering
- HND Aerospace Engineering
- HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- HND Engineering
- HND Mechanical Engineering
The choice of specialism doesn't need to be made in advance, but does need to be clear by the time students enrol. The staff will ask you which award you want to exit with and will arrange your modules and timetable to suit.
This HND is the first two years of the 3-year BEng programme. Students who pass the HND will automatically be made an offer to progress to BEng.
This programme is aimed at students who have completed a Level 3 course in Engineering or a related subject, who are looking to study a Higher Education programme locally to progress their career within this sector.
Please note that students without the formal entry criteria but with relevant experience will also be considered.
Students entering from level 3 will take two years to complete the HND, but will qualify for an HNC after year one and may leave with that award if they wish.
This HND can also be taken as a top-up from an HNC in Engineering. If you have an HNC in a relevant engineering subject you will normally only need to complete six modules and wil complete the HND in one year. Part-time students who completed their HNCs at the College will normally have taken additional modules and will be able to complete the HND in one part-time year.
Students in employment are also able to undertake this programme as a Higher Apprenticeship.
You will take 12 modules, six modules shared by all engineering disciplines (Engineering Science, Engineering Mathematics Design & Project, Professional Engineering, Research Project and Further Mathematics) plus six more modules determined by your chosen exit award.
A series of written and practical work is assessed by your tutors and will determine your overall grade.
Candidates are selected on the basis of their ability to cope with and benefit from the programme. Their suitability can be demonstrated either through previous educational achievement or through experience and aptitude.
Admission by prior qualification will normally require a minimum 48 UCAS Tariff points with the majority of the points gained in engineering, mathematics or science subjects. Typically, points can be derived from:
o One or more GCE A level(s) or Vocational A level pass or equivalent
o Two AS level passes
o BTEC National Diploma/Certificate
o Other qualifications such as Scottish Highers, Welsh Baccalaureate, Irish Leaving Certificates, International Baccalaureate, with the required UCAS points
o A pass in a recognised Access course
o Equivalent Scottish or Irish qualifications
Candidates should normally have a qualification at level 3 that has appropriate mathematical content. Admission by experience and aptitude will be based on the length and type of the candidate’s employment experience and his/her ability to demonstrate an aptitude and enthusiasm for the subject. As part of this process, candidates may be required to undertake aptitude tests and/or to provide personal and/or employment references.
Candidates with an HNC in Engineering can apply for direct entry into year two.
Completion of the HND Engineering provides a valuable vocational qualification to enhance students' career prospects, and provides progression to the College's BEng (Hons) programme.
