Course overview

This programme is aimed at those wanting to teach in Further, Higher and Adult Education, also within the 14+ School sector (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills).

What will I learn

Modules in the programme may include:

Year 1:

• Research Informed Teaching, Learning and Assessment
• Becoming a Subject Specialist Teacher

Year 2:

• Being a Subject Specialist Teacher
• Policy and Professional Issues

How will the courses be assessed?

Assessment takes place at the end of each module and takes the form of reports, presentations, essays, case studies and logs/journals, as appropriate.

Entry requirements

PGCE Professional Graduate / Post Graduate Entry Requirements

  • UK Honours Degree
  • Applicants will need to have a good level of Maths and English
  • Appropriate work experience in the area you wish to teach

Disclosure and Barring Scheme: Candidates who do not already have a current DBS through their employment will need to apply for one. A DBS check and disclosure of convictions are course requirements, but having a clean DBS is not a condition of entry.  Where a DBS disclosure raises issues, these will be discussed with the candidate and consideration given to their impact on the availability of placements and future employability.

Certificate in Education Entry Requirements

  • You should have a HNC, CGLI Advanced, NVQ or equivalent at Level 3 or 4, HNC/HND or Advanced Diploma or other professional qualification.
  • You are required to be in paid employment, as a teacher or trainer, for a minimum of 100 hours (at least 50 hours in any one year) at a recognised training or educational establishment. Voluntary teaching/training may be acceptable if the university conditions are met. You will be required to identify a work-based mentor who can guide you in your subject specialism.

Progression

PGCE students are normally able to progress onto their Masters Degree upon completion of this programme.
